When it comes to building your pond, don't forget that your filter area layout is as important as the pond itself. All to often, hours of planning are spent on the pond, with little thought of the filter area. This is not to say filtration is overlooked, but rather the placement of filter equipment is ignored.
Though your pond itself will be the center of attention, your filtration system is the "heart" of your pond and deserves the same attention to detail.
When it comes to your filtration area, just like your pond, build it as large as possible given the equipment your using, the space you have available, and/or your budget. At a minimum you should be servicing your filter(s) once a week and having an area that is cramped and hard to work in will make the task more difficult. If a task becomes a "chore" it's more easily ignored.
Once you've determined the available area for your filtration equipment, place that equipment on the ground in different positions to see what works best. If your filter(s) will be in a "filter pit", using duct tape, layout the dimensions of the pit on your garage floor, patio or deck, then arrange your equipment to suit your needs. Using either of these methods will also give you an idea on where to bring up your plumbing, giving a "Pro" look to your project.
Thing to remember as you layout your filter area:
1. Accessability.
2. Noise (from water pumps, air pumps, showers...etc.).
3. Availability of electricity, source water and drainage.
4. Visibility.
A little extra time spent now will pay off for many years to come and allow you more time to enjoy your pond.
